Basketball proceeds to aid spinal cord research

North Carolina Central will dedicate its home men's basketball game against Winston-Salem State to Durham native and NBA standout RodneyRogers in an effort to raise awareness of spinal cord injuries, rehabilitation and research.

The Dec. 18 game starts at 7:30 p.m. inside NCCU's McLendon-McDougald Gymnasium. Rogers sustained a spinal cord injury in a Nov. 28 accident. NCCU will donate 5.4 percent of ticket sales to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, where Rogers is undergoing rehabilitation.

HONORS

BIG SOUTH: High Point University is in second place in the Sasser Cup Trophy competition. The trophy is awarded to the Big South member with the most successful year athletically. Coastal Carolina leads with an 11.96 average. High Point has an 11.20 average. Liberty (10.33) is third.

UNCG: Six UNCG softball players have been named National Fastpitch Coaches Association Scholar-Athletes and the team has been named an NFCA All-Academic team for the 2007-08 season. Emily Akiyama, Carolyn Boyd, Kayla Hensley, Lyndsay Mouse, Laura Olenderski and Brandi Schnute all earned Scholar-Athlete status. To qualify, athletes must have a 3.5 GPA for the year.

UNCG: UNCG assistant men's golf coach and dean emeritus of the School of Health and Human Performance Dr. Bob Christina has been honored in this month's Golf Magazine for his contribution to the sport.

NATIONAL GC SENIOR SCRAMBLE: The team of Ernie Newton of High Point and Larry Boswell of Jamestown is tied for first after the first day of competition at the National GC Senior Scramble.

ARCHERY
