Helping the hungry and the homeless

The Operation Greensboro Cares fundraising drive is moving into its first full week.

Community organizations, led by the United Way and including the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro, the News & Record and other media partners, are asking for donations to help meet a growing demand for emergency food and shelter in the city.

Donations will be distributed to FaithAction International House, Food Not Bombs, Greensboro Urban Ministry, Lutheran Family Services, Salvation Army of Greensboro, Senior Resources of Guilford and The Servant Center.

FAITHACTION INTERNATIONAL HOUSE

Mission: Assisting immigrants in the area.

Services provided: Case management, assistance with housing, help navigating systems of service and support for families in crisis. Also free English classes (with child care) and citizenship preparation classes for refugees and eligible immigrants.

The need: Funds to help provide services to refugees and immigrants.

FOOD NOT BOMBS

Mission: Providing free vegetarian food and protesting war and poverty.

Services provided: A food pantry operates from 4 to 6 p.m. Fridays at 1214 Grove St. A meal is provided at 6 p.m. Mondays at the Central Library and at 6 p.m. Thursdays 1214 Grove St.

The need: Vegetarian food, volunteers.

GREENSBORO URBAN MINISTRY

Mission: Providing services to the homeless and low-income residents.

Services provided: Food, clothing, housing and financial aid.

The need: First priority is funding for the WE (Winter Emergency Shelter) initiative. Closely associated with WE are efforts to begin an interim day center for the winter. Pathways, an emergency family shelter. Emergency assistance with rent, heat, mortgage, food and clothing is needed.

Volunteer opportunities: Serving meals, children's activities and tutoring, sorting donations, managing shelters, working with clients.

LUTHERAN FAMILY SERVICES

Mission: Helping "the most vulnerable" in the community.

Services provided: Adoption services, refugee case management, employment readiness, language and cultural orientation, immigration services and employment services.

The need: Funds for rent, utilities and food; household furnishings, including furniture, linens, kitchenware and cleaning supplies; winter coats, new hats, gloves, scarves and socks; employers for clients with full range of skills and education.

Volunteer opportunities: Language and cultural mentoring; transportation; pick up and delivery of donated items; job mentoring and coaching; case management assistants.

SALVATION ARMY OF GREENSBORO

Mission: Helping low-income residents

Services provided: Homeless shelter, Christmas gifts to children in low-income families, youth services and assistance for low-income residents.

The need: Money, clothing and household goods; volunteers.

Volunteer opportunities: Working in stores and office, working with children as coach or tutor.

SENIOR RESOURCES OF GUILFORD

Mission: Providing services to enhance the independence, health and quality of life for older residents.

Services provided: Nutrition programs, medical transportation and Mobile Meals.

The need: For Mobile Meals. Nineteen people are on the waiting list, and the cost is $1,200 to provide lunch for a year. More than 400 people are being served daily.

Volunteer opportunities: Include Mobile Meals delivery, transportation and home repairs.

THE SERVANT CENTER

Mission: Provide comprehensive services to low-income elderly and disabled.

Services provided: Food pantry and grocery assistance, transitional housing for homeless disabled men, permanent housing for disabled men, services to homeless and those at risk for homelessness and disability assistance.

The need: The agency is dealing with higher costs and a higher demand for services. The number of people served by the food pantry has gone from 800 a month to 1,500 a month.

Volunteer opportunities: Drivers, office workers, planting and harvesting vegetables and beautification work and food-drive organizers.
