RALEIGH (AP) - North Carolina state senators finally can have laptop computers at their desks, but taxpayers won't catch them checking e-mail or surfing the Web on the floor.
Senate leaders will permit members to use special laptops in the chamber when the Legislature reconvenes next month.
But access will be restricted to legislative matters such as proposed bills, state laws and Senate rules. No Web sites outside of the General Assembly will be allowed.
The House has allowed members to use their state-issued laptops on the floor for years with no restrictions. Senate Democratic leaders had frowned upon the idea, saying computers would be a distraction.
The "chamber-only" laptops are refurbished computers already owned by the state. Buying new computers would have cost more than $40,000.
