EDEN — Hanesbrands Inc. will close its Eden textile plant in early 2009, leaving 600 employees out of work.
The company originally said the plant would close by the end of summer 2009, but was able to pinpoint a more specific window once production demand was determined, said spokesman Matt Hall.
It's anticipated the plant will now close at the end of January or in the first two weeks of February, he said.
"Now we have greater visibility to orders and the production that is needed," he said.
"With the slack economy and with less demand, we've determined our production schedule."
An adjacent yarn plant, which employed 120 people, has already been functionally phased out, Hall said.
The yarn factory was closed because the company had enough capacity elsewhere, he said. The textiles will be made in the Caribbean basin and in Central America.
