Elon puts 10 on all-SoCon football team

Elon landed three players on the All-Southern Conference first-team in football, as selected by the league's head coaches. A program-high 10 Phoenix players were recognized by the conference. Elon offensive lineman David Harrison, wide receiver Terrell Hudgins and kicker Andrew Wilcox made the first team. Punter Brandon Lane of Southeast Guilford, defensive lineman Eric Ludwig of Western Alamance, running back Brandon Newsome, quarterback Scott Riddle of Eastern Randolph, linebacker Corey Weaver and defensive back Walker White earned second-team accolades, while linebacker Joshua Jones earned a spot on the league's all-freshman team.

Appalachian State swept the major individual awards. Quarterback Armanti Edwards was named the league's offensive player of the year, middle linebacker Jacque Roman was tabbed defensive player of the year and coach Jerry Moore won his sixth coach of the year award. Appalachian's 10 first-team all-SoCon honorees consisted of Edwards, offensive linemen Jonathan Bieschke and Brad Coley, tight end Ben Jorden, Roman, linebacker Pierre Banks, defensive end Jabari Fletcher, defensive backs Mark LeGree and Cortez Gilbert and punter Neil Young. The second team included Mountaineer linemen Mario Acitelli and Daniel Kilgore, defensive tackle Anthony Williams and linebacker D.J. Smith. Additionally, Jorden, wide receiver Brian Quick, defensive end Lanston Tanyi and defensive back Ed Gainey of Mt. Tabor were voted to the all-freshman team.

MEN'S SOCCER

NORTH CAROLINA 1, JACKSONVILLE 0: A 56th-minute goal by freshman forward Billy Schuler was all the offense No. 13 seed North Carolina needed in a victory over Jacksonville in the second round of the NCAA men's soccer championship at Fetzer Field. Schuler's strike snaps a five-game losing skid for the Tar Heels and sends the program into the round of 16 for the first time since 2005. UNC (12-7-1) will host Illinois-Chicago (12-3-6) at 1 p.m. Sunday in a third-round match. The Flames advanced earlier by outdistancing No. 4 seed Michigan State in penalty kicks 3-2.

WAKE FOREST 1, WILLIAM & MARY 0 (OT): Cody Arnoux's goal in the 95th minute lifted Wake Forest's to an overtime win over William & Mary in the second round of the NCAA tournament. The Deacons advance to face the winner of the Boston College-Dartmouth game, scheduled for 1 p.m. today. The game was postponed Tuesday. Wake Forest will next play on Sunday at 1 p.m. Wake Forest improved to 19-1-1, while William & Mary fell to 11-7-3.

MEN'S GOLF

NORTH CAROLINA: Kevin O'Connell, a sophomore at North Carolina, finished in 20th place at the 34th annual Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic, which was played at the El Paso (Texas) Country Club, a par 71, 6,842-yard layout.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

GREENSBORO COLLEGE: Greensboro College is receiving national attention. The Pride earned a vote in the current WBCA USA Today ESPN NCAA Division III top 25 coaches' poll.

SIGNINGS

GARDNER-WEBB: Conner Scarborough of High Point Christian Academy is one of 10 baseball signees to Gardner-Webb. Scarborough compiled a 10-2 record with a 2.25 ERA and 101 strikeouts in 64 innings pitched last season.

ELON: Carly Ledbetter of Hilton Head, S.C., Celia Eddy of Gulf Breeze, Fla., and Alison Deatsch of Elmhurt, Ill., have signed to play volleyball at Elon.
