Fire dept. bell found on N.C. State building's roof

Wednesday, November 19, 2008

RALEIGH (AP) - An 1870 bell used to alert Raleigh residents to a fire is being returned to the city after being found on the roof of a building at N.C. State.

An architecture graduate student found the bell in a cage atop Withers Hall two years ago.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported the half-ton bronze bell was created at a foundry in Baltimore in 1870.

The bell originally was placed at the block-long Metropolitan Hall in Raleigh and in 1914 was placed at the city's first fire station. It was moved to N.C. State in 1938.

The university was officially returning the bell to the city in a ceremony Wednesday.

Fire Chief John McGrath says the bell still needs to be cleaned. It could be placed at the $226 million public safety building that will begin construction next year.
