The Internal Revenue Service issued a warning Monday about scam emails regarding undelivered Economic Stimulus payments.
"We're getting reports of people getting an e-mail that appears to come from the IRS telling recipients to respond to get their 2008 Economic Stimulus Refund," said IRS spokesperson Mark Hanson.
The IRS never sends unsolicited emails regarding people's taxes, Hanson said. If taxpayers filed a 2007 federal tax return with the IRS, that's all that is required to receive a stimulus payment. The agency will take care of other details.
Hanson also warned people not to access links or attachments included in scam emails, which sometimes allows scammers to place malicious software on computers. If a link or attachment was opened, users should scan their computers for virus and spyware and pay close attention to financial statements, he said.
