Wake Forest tops N.C. State 4-1 at ACC men's soccer tournament

No. 1 Wake Forest (18-0-1, 7-0-1 ACC) scored four unanswered goals to register a 4-1 come-from-behind win over eighth seed N.C. State (9-9-1, 3-5-0 ACC) on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the 2008 ACC men's soccer tournament at Koka Booth Stadium in Cary.

With the win, the Demon Deacons advance to Friday's semifinal against Virginia, a 4-2 winner over Duke in Wednesday's quarterfinal. The Deacs have won their quarterfinal match each of the last five seasons.

MARYLAND 1, UNC 0: No. 4 Maryland rode a 14th-minute goal from Jeremy Hall and six saves from Zac Macmath.

The Tar Heels (11-7-1) will now hope to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA championship when the field is announced Monday. Carolina has lost five straight matches in the same season for the first time in school history.

MURPHY LOSES PLAYOFF: Chris Tucker won the Rock Barn Senior Open held at Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover in a one-hole playoff with Greensboro's Rick Murphy. Murphy, PGA professional at the Carolina Golf Academy, had rounds of 70 (-1) and 70 (-2) for a 3-under 140.

AUSTIN STEPPING DOWN: North Carolina women's coach Sally Austin will step down at the conclusion of the season to pursue other interests and to spend more time with her family.

In Austin's 151/2 seasons at UNC, Carolina has finished in the top 25 at the NCAA Championship six times. The Tar Heels have won six tournament titles and seven players have captured 14 individual championships.

MYERS COMMITS: Will Myers of Wesleyan Academy, an honorable mention All-Area selection for the state champion Trojans last season, has committed to play at South Carolina.

WOMEN'S swimming

GUILFORD 144, SALEM COLLEGE 40: Juniors Justine Merritt and Kim Abbott both won two events in Guilford College's 144-40 non-conference win over visiting Salem College. The Quakers won all 11 events to even their dual meet record at 1-1.

Merritt won back-to-back races as she took the 50-meter freestyle in 30.32 seconds, followed by the 200 individual medley in 2:51.82. Abbott posted victories in the 200 freestyle (2:36.19) and the 100 backstroke in 1:23.84.

volleyball

WAKE FOREST 3, N.C. STATE 1: Redshirt sophomore Kate Rodriguez came off the bench and gave the Demon Deacons a stellar performance in a four-set victory over N.C. State at Reynolds Coliseum. The Deacs held on for a 19-25, 25-15, 25-20 and 31-29 victory. Rodriguez posted career-highs of four service aces, 11 digs and two assists to go along with six kills.
