GREENSBORO - N.C. A&T honored veterans among its university community at a luncheon Tuesday that was attended by the chancellor and U.S. Sen.-elect Kay Hagan.
Each thanked the veterans in attendance for their service and called on everyone else to support people who have served their country.
"Honor people who honor us," said Chancellor Stanley Battle. "Serve people who serve us."
Hagan gave a long list of relatives who are veterans or who currently are serving in the military.
She said she met her husband at law school, which he was attending using the Montgomery GI Bill, a benefit that pays service members to go to college.
"I've seen firsthand the strong men and women of the military," Hagan said. "That's one of the things that makes our military the best in the world."
"I'm honored that we are finally being recognized," said Hoby Coleman, an A&T staff member and a member of the armed forces for the past 30 years. He returned from a tour in Afghanistan in April.
After the luncheon, ROTC cadets laid a wreath at the school's veterans memorial.
