Vogelbach sets more records

GREENSBORO -- Quarterback Josh Vogelbach played the final home game of his record-breaking career at Guilford College, and fittingly it was a shootout. Unfortunately for Vogelbach and the Quakers, they came out on the short end of a 49-34 decision to Catholic University in their homecoming game at Herb Appenzeller Field on Saturday afternoon.

Vogelbach entered the game with 15 NCAA Division III passing records under his belt and added two more against Catholic. His first pass in the second quarter, a 15-yard completion to Thomas Kicinski, gave him the all-time record in Division III for passing yards, eclipsing the mark established by Justin Peery of Westminster (Mo.).

His next pass was a 3-yard score to Chad Kastor. It was his second TD of the game as the Quakers took a 14-7 lead.

"The thing that Josh does more than anyone I've been around is that he throws a very accurate pass," said Guilford coach Kevin Kiesel. "He throws a very catchable ball. He really puts the ball in there all the time. That's a lot of his success -- it's an easy ball to catch."

Vogelbach completed 29 of 39 passes for 297 yards with three touchdowns.

His third touchdown of the game came late in the third quarter when he connected with Hagen Miller on a 38-yard pass, which gave him the Division III record for yards of total offense. Once again, he broke a mark established by Peery, who had 13,645 total yards.

"I can't even keep up with all the things that come across the desk about what he's done," Kiesel said. "He's just a wonderful, hard-working guy. I'm sure he'd turn in all of his records for some more wins, but I'm very happy for him."

Vogelbach has 13,753 yards of total offense, thanks to his 50 yards rushing Saturday in addition to his passing. And the total offense does not include receiving yards, as Vogelbach caught his first collegiate pass, from Miller on a wide receiver option play that nearly resulted in a TD.

But Vogelbach's popularity extends beyond the field.

"Josh has been a true joy for Guilford College," said Randy Doss, the school's vice president for enrollment services. "I remember meeting him when he wanted to transfer from East Carolina.

"The first thing that I knew about Josh was how good a student he is. He's remained a fantastic student at Guilford. Secondly, lo and behold, he has an amazing ability on the football field. For him to be able to balance these two things, to do the things he's done in football, the records he's had and achieved, and still be an outstanding student, it's really what small college football is all about."

On Vogelbach's big day, another player also etched his name in the Guilford record book. Former Southern Guilford star Justin Parker ran for 113 yards and two touchdowns to set the Quakers' single-season mark for rushing touchdowns. Parker has 10 TDs on the ground.
