RALEIGH (AP) - Outside groups have spent more than $22 million dollars to influence North Carolina's U.S. Senate election, with much of money aimed at unseating first-term Republican incumbent Elizabeth Dole.
Dole is one of the GOP's marquee names. But Democrats see her as vulnerable in a year in which they hope to capture 60 seats in the chamber and win a filibuster-proof majority.
Federal Election Commission records released Monday show that political committees - led by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee - have spent more than $10 million on negative ads targeting Dole.
By comparison, outside groups have spent about half that much attacking her Democratic rival, state Sen. Kay Hagan of Greensboro.
An additional $6.7 million has targeted the candidate without explicitly asking voters to support or oppose them.
