Easley urges full expansion of early voting hours
RALEIGH (AP) - Gov. Mike Easley is urging those North Carolina counties that don't plan to stay open late Saturday afternoon for extra early voting to change their minds.
Easley said Friday that half of the state's 100 counties plan to keep accepting early ballots until 5 p.m. Saturday - an extension of four hours.
He wants those election boards that plan to close early voting as originally scheduled at 1 p.m. to reconsider.
North Carolina's state elections board agreed Thursday to extend the early voting hours. Counties could close their polls at 1 p.m. if election commissioners from both parties agreed to do so without dissent.
As of late Thursday, more than 2 million people have cast an early ballot in North Carolina - a turnout of 33 percent before Election Day.
