GREENSBORO — It looked as though a local convenience store would be robbed for the third time in 10 days.

But Tuesday night, an armed security guard foiled a robbery attempt at the C and C Market at 2820 Lawndale Drive.

It was the guard’s first night at the store. The store owners had hired a security firm Tuesday afternoon. “We needed the protection,” said Chia Chong, one of the store’s owners. “We’re just about fed up” with getting robbed.

Greensboro police said a man with a gun entered the store at 10:04 p.m. Tuesday and demanded money.

A uniformed security guard inside the store drew his gun, and the would-be robber fled without taking any cash. No shots were fired, and no one was injured.

Col. John Callicutt of Walton Protective Services in Greensboro confirmed this account. He said Sgt. Matthew Farmer, who has been with the company for about a year, was assigned to the store Tuesday night.

The C and C Market, across from the Target on Lawndale, has been a frequent robbery target. On Oct. 19, Chong’s husband, Gab “Sam” Lib, was shot in the neck during a robbery attempt. The store was robbed again Oct. 23, and Lib was pistol-whipped. He has since recovered and returned to work.

Since the robberies, Chong said she has seen more police in the area.

She also said the market has varied its operating hours and, as a safety precaution, is not telling people when the store will open and close each day.

And the armed guard will remain at various times, she said.

“I’m glad we were there last night,” Callicutt said, “or it might have happened again.”
