A couple of retailers are set to reward you for enduring long lines at the polls and endless candidate ad spots.

From 5 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 4, Ben & Jerry's scoop shops at 3332 W. Friendly Ave. at the Shops at Friendly Center in Greensboro and 5836 Samet Drive at the Palladium in High Point are offering a free scoops of ice cream to everyone who votes.

For information, call 856-2178 or 841-2178.

Shane's Rib Shack in Greensboro (4217-A W. Wendover Ave. and 1410 Westover Terrace) will give free chicken tenders on Nov. 4.

The day also marks the beginning of a family value meal that includes a pound of pork or chicken barbecue, a pint of sauce, two pints of sides, four buns, four desserts and a gallon of tea for $20.

For information, call 292-7272 or 272-4696.

Bakery reopens

Gratefully, Grateful Bread (1506 N. Main St., High Point; 884-4424) bakery has reopened.

The bakery ran into a snafu in late September with state sales taxes owed. But that situation has been resolved, says Teresa Mackey, who owns the 8-year-old bakery with her husband, David.

The popular bakery serves breakfast and lunch Monday through Saturday, including a Saturday brunch. Grateful Bread offers a vegetarian dinner on Tuesday and Thursday nights with occasional live acoustic music.

Cafe closes

Perhaps one of Greensboro's best kept secrets has closed.

For a year, Potato Workz served up loaded baked potatoes and New Orleans Muffalettas. But it was probably the Po'boys, Shrimp Etouffee and Jambalaya that really jazzed folks.

New Orleans native Roger Devall said he was unable to negotiate a new lease and will focus on a full-time business he has maintained while running the restaurant on the side. He says he'd like to open again if he can find the right place. For now, Devall says he'll continue to cater. He can be reached at 362-3535.

Printworks Bistro expands menu

It's been a year since Printworks Bistro (702 Green Valley Road, Greensboro) opened at the Proximity Hotel in Greensboro. That has given the kitchen staff ample time to find sure footing, says executive chef Bart Ortiz. So it's a good time for the restaurant to roll out an expanded menu with twice as many appetizers and twice as many entrees.

Notable appetizers include Duck Ravioli ($10) and a selection of flat breads ($9) that include smoked pear, bacon or spinach. Lunch items include the Ploughman's Lunch ($12) of chilled roast beef and chickpea salad. Dinner items include Casoulet ($21) with sausage and Duck Confit, All-natural "Osso Buco-style" Beef Short Ribs ($25) and Roasted Pork Loin ($24) stuffed with apples and prunes. Desserts include Pear, Cranberry and Quince Crumble ($7).

For a complete menu, visit www.printworksbistro.com. For reservations, call 379-0699.

Kitchen store moves

Williams-Sonoma, formerly in Four Seasons Town Centre in Greensboro, has moved to 3320 W. Friendly Ave. (294-2063) at Friendly Center in Greensboro.

The grand opening is Saturday. The new store will offer expanded product lines.

Fall menu

Chef Jay Pierce has updated some versions of traditional Southern fare with Lucky 32's (1421 Westover Terrace, Greensboro) fall menu.

The menu includes Tasso Ham and Caramelized Onion Dip ($9), Fried Chicken Livers with Corn Macque Choux ($7), Butternut Squash Soup ($3 cup, $5 bowl), Persimmon-Glazed Mahi Mahi ($13), Cast Iron Seared New York Strip Steak with Tasso Gravy ($27) and Fried Sweet Potato Pie ($6).

For a complete menu, visit www.lucky32.com. For reservations, call 370-0707.

Grand opening

It has been quietly serving customers for a couple of weeks, but Greensboro's newest McDonald's (14102 Fernhurst Way) off South-Elm Eugene Street at I-40/85 exit 124 is having a grand opening Nov. 1.

In addition to an upscale look of stone and pendant lighting, the new McDonald's features prints of works by local artist William Mangum.

Red Cross fundraiser

The Red Cross Youth Club will hold a fundraiser 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Chick-fil-A (611 Pembroke Road, Greensboro; 323-0298) at Friendly Center.

Ten percent of proceeds go directly to the Red Cross. There will also be a raffle and entertainment.

Scoop shop adds flavors

Scoops Ice Cream (5605 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro; 299-8744) at Quaker Village has some new flavors that include Strawberry Cheesecake, German Chocolate and Playdough.

Grilled cheese and Reuben sandwiches are also now available.

Scoops is now open noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Be sure to check out the daily specials.

Children's museum benefit

Fleming's Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar (3342 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro) is holding a benefit 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 5 for the Greensboro Children's Museum.

Enjoy a short presentation on the museum's new medical exhibit while sampling 10 selected wines and free appetizers. Proceeds from each glass of wine sold benefit the museum. For information, call 294-7790.

Italian franchise to open

Grioli's Italian Bistro and Pizzeria will be opening at 4008-A Battleground Ave. in The Shops at Battleground North.

The franchise offers antipasti dishes, Italian pastas, bistro-style subs, classic steak chicken and seafood dishes and New York-style pizzas.
