Obama sign is way up there

Leslie and John Buckner have gone to great heights to show their support for Democratic presidential nominee U.S. Sen. Barack Obama.

After their ground-level Obama sign disappeared, John Buckner decided to put the new one 30 feet off the ground.

John Buckner, who owns a sign company, used his "bucket truck" -- the kind with an extended arm and a basket on the end -- to hang the sign in their pine tree.

"Sometimes he has to hang signs really high up, so we thought why not hang our sign high up?" Leslie Buckner said.

The Buckners are "really excited about this election," she said. "My husband and I are big Barack Obama fans."

The Buckners recalled watching Obama give a speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention.

"My husband just stood there watching, and when he was finished, he was like, 'I want him to be our president.' There's just so much energy around him," Leslie Buckner said.

When Obama and Joe Biden rallied in Greensboro earlier this month, Leslie Buckner said she was right there in the crowd. John Buckner drives around every day with Obama graphics on his work truck that read, "Small businesses for Obama."

John Buckner made the campaign signs -- original and replacement -- himself.

"Our neighbor liked the sign, so my husband made him one, too," Leslie Buckner said.

Many of the Buckners' neighbors on Rambling Road have McCain-Palin signs.

"We were the first to put up an Obama sign, I believe," she said.

One day, John Buckner noticed some teenagers walking toward their signs. After he yelled to them, the kids left. It wasn't long after that the Buckners' and neighbor's Obama signs were gone. The McCain-Palin signs remained untouched. So far, the Buckners' latest sign has been safe.

"We're thinking that they won't be able to scale that tree to reach it," Leslie Buckner said.
