Southwest senior organizes 'Dig for a Cure'

Tuesday, October 14, 2008

Southwest Guilford senior LeAnne Hoyle lost her grandmother to breast cancer while she was in kindergarten, and one of her aunts was diagnosed with the disease this spring.

Taking a cue from other schools in the area, Hoyle set up a "Dig for the Cure" fundraiser at tonight's volleyball match against Glenn. The schools have been selling T-shirts to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and they'll add their gate revenue from tonight's regular- season finale.

The teams will also wear identical pink jerseys for their 6:30 p.m. match, a gesture only volleyball players could get away with.

"I have to remind people it doesn't matter in volleyball because we're on two sides of the net," said Southwest head coach Cindy Seymour.

Mount Tabor, Page and Grimsley held similar promotions last year, and High Point University will follow suit this season.

Here's a brief chat with Hoyle, who coordinated the night as her senior project:

Question: What was it like putting this all together?

Answer: It was a lot more overwhelming than I thought. We decided we had to get sponsors to help pay for T-shirts, so I typed out a letter to give to sponsors to ask them to help. I'd send letters to people and they'd never reply. I either would contact them directly or end up making extra letters and giving them to them, too. We got it all paid for eventually.

Q: How's business?

A: We had 260 shirts to sell, and we're down to 30. Glenn helped us to sell them, and they called the other day and asked us to get more. We also had a jar set up to donate. And one of my friend's moms makes bracelets for breast cancer, so she's going to set up here and give back some of her profit.

Q: How much are you hoping to donate?

A: I just counted most of it at lunch, and just from T-shirts alone we had $500. We have about $830 altogether, and that doesn't include what people will donate at the game and what we get from bracelets. All the money we make, we're donating.

Q: How has this season been for you on the court?

A: We've done all right. We've played really good in our games, but our record (3-5 in conference) isn't the greatest. We're scrappy. Ask anybody on our team and they're all going to say Glenn's one of biggest rivals. But we're all playing for one cause.

How Many Women Get breast cancer?

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer. About 182,460 women in the United States will be found to have invasive breast cancer in 2008. About 40,480 women will die from the disease this year. Right now there are about two and a half million breast cancer survivors in the United States. The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer some time during her life is about 1 in 8. The chance of dying from breast cancer is about 1 in 35. Breast cancer death rates are going down. This is probably the result of finding the cancer earlier and improved treatment.
