One of the most respected veteran judges on the Guilford County District Court bench is challenged by a younger prosecutor known for being tough.
A. Robinson "Robby" Hassell, 47, was appointed to the bench in 1999, then elected in 2000 and 2004. He's a thoughtful, knowledgeable judge whose highest calling someday might be at the appellate level. Although he presides on a rotating basis in all courtrooms, his expertise in complex civil matters sets him above many of his judicial colleagues. A certified juvenile court judge, he's also patient and genial. He's active in professional associations and community organizations, contributing to the advancement of the judiciary and public understanding of the court system.
One criticism heard is that he sometimes doesn't push the pace in the courtroom, but taking time to think through cases isn't always a bad thing.
Challenger Avery Michelle Crump, 36, isn't easygoing. Although a North Carolina native, she began her career as a prosecutor in the rough-and-tumble Bronx, N.Y. She returned in 2000 to work as an assistant district attorney in Guilford County. For six years, she was assigned to juvenile court, prosecuting some very difficult cases. She says she'd like to preside as a judge in juvenile court.
Crump's reputation is mixed. Some observers view her as effective and hard-nosed, others as sometimes abrasive and overly aggressive. Her real problem in this election, however, is running against a very good judge. Hassell's work over the past nine years recommends his re-election.
