ASHEVILLE (AP) — The tourism director for Haywood County has resigned following her arrest on marijuana possession and drug paraphernalia charges.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reported today that Scotty Medford Ellis had served as director of the county's tourism authority since 1995. Her resignation is effective Nov. 1.

Ellis was charged with misdemeanor offenses Sunday after police received a complaint about drug activity in a supermarket parking lot. A police report said a bag contained deodorizing spray, a half ounce of marijuana, a gram of hashish and a glass pipe.

She previously pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor drug charges stemming from a Dec. 30 traffic stop.

Ellis said she's proud of the progress the western North Carolina county has made as a vacation destination.
