Rat hunting prompts school lockdown

Friday, October 10, 2008

HENDERSONVILLE (AP) — Police say a North Carolina woman hunting rats on her property caused a neighboring public school to keep its students and staff inside until police determined she wasn't a threat.

The Times-News of Hendersonville reported today that a bus driver saw the woman and officials thought she was an armed student on school property. Police arrived at Balfour Education Center about 9 a.m.

The Henderson County Sheriff's Office said officers left the school about an hour later.

Authorities said the woman wasn't on school property, wasn't doing anything wrong and had a rifle to shoot rats. The woman wasn't identified.

Sheriff Rick Davis said the call to authorities was properly handled.
