Ragsdale's Canty commits to HPU for basketball

(Updated 5:33 am)

Ragsdale junior Jay Canty has committed to play basketball at High Point. The Tigers' 6-foot-5 do-it-all wing player also had offers from UNCG and Appalachian and had received interest from some bigger schools, including Wake, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Miami. But Canty wanted to wrap up his decision before his junior season, and the allure of being 15 minutes from home was a major plus.

"They were the ones that really put forth the most effort to get him," said Ragsdale head coach Craig Shoemaker.

Canty was a first-team all-area selection last season after posting 17.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2 blocks a game.

"He's the personality of Ragsdale basketball," Shoemaker said. "He's always got a smile on his face, he's got a ton of friends here ... he's enjoyed his role without getting a big head about what he's accomplished."
