High school football previews

(Updated 8:14 am)

Here's a look at tonight's high school football games:

East Forsyth (5-1) at Northwest Guilford (3-3)

You could make a case for either of these teams as a favorite in the Metro 4-A. The Eagles were 5-0 before losing at West Forsyth last week. Quarterback Danny O'Brien, a Maryland commitment, has diversified his game to cement himself as one of the conference's better players. Northwest is a serious sleeper. The three Vikings' losses have come by a touchdown or less, and they get East, Grimsley and Page at home. They host the Pirates in the season's final week, which could wind up being the conference championship.

Charlotte Christian (6-0) at Northern Guilford (5-1)

The Nighthawks' biggest test rolls into town in the form of undefeated Charlotte Christian, which has outscored its opponents 199-18. "We've had to mature quickly with the teams we've been playing," Northern head coach Johnny Roscoe said. "An emotional high and then a drop off - we have to avoid that."

Southern Guilford (4-2) at McMichael (5-1)

How do you put it in words? Replacing Scotty Wayne is hard enough to do on the field, but that's a minor concern after Southern's star running back was killed in a car wreck Saturday. The Storm will also be without quarterback Darren Garcia, who suffered chest and shoulder injuries in the accident and will miss the rest of the season. What we would have talked about as a pivotal game in the North State 2-A is now more important as part of the Storm's healing process.

High Point Central (4-2) at Grimsley (2-4)

Five weeks and counting since the Whirlies won a game - or scored more than 13 points, for that matter - so they're in need of a bailout as much as Wall Street. The Bison quieted any discussion of a slip by handing North Davidson its second loss last week.

Page (3-3) at Smith (0-6)

The Pirates have made it in one piece through the roughest waters they'll see this season. But how will they respond to back-to-back-to-back backbreakers? They get the conference's two teams with a losing record before facing East Forsyth, High Point Central and Northwest.

Morehead (0-6) at Dudley (7-0)

I'd say this will be Morehead head coach Jason Smart's first win at his alma mater, but it's hard to pick a team averaging eight points a game against one that can get that many before the opening kickoff. Dudley's margin of victory the last five games: 200-27.

Northeast Guilford (2-4) at Western Alamance (6-1)

Could it be as simple as one player? When Warriors quarterback Donald Britt had to sit out Western's second game with a concussion, his team was shut out by Southern Alamance. Since then, they've averaged more than 40 points a game, including Britt's six-touchdown performance in last week's 48-0 win over Rockingham. "They're a different team without him, believe me," said Northeast head coach Tommy Pursley.

Bartlett Yancey (1-5) at Rockingham County (1-5)

Rockingham has had a rough start, but the good news is the worst of it should be over. The Cougars' five losses have come to teams with a combined 30-2 record, but their final five opponents are a combined 9-20. Bartlett Yancey is coached by former Rockingham defensive coordinator Jason Phelps.

Ragsdale (7-0) at Trinity (3-4)

The Bulldogs have won two straight, including last week's 14-12 decision over Southeast. But Ragsdale, ranked fourth in the AP 3-A poll, has won this matchup three years in a row, including 60-15 last season.

Asheboro (4-2) at Southeast Guilford (3-3)

The Falcons' last four games have been decided by a touchdown or less, including two straight losses by a total of three points. For the cardiac health of Southeast fans, a blowout couldn't hurt.

West Stokes (5-1) at Reidsville (6-0)

All of the sudden, the North State 2-A is more stocked than my cupboard after Harris Teeter triple coupon day. Reidsville and Eastern are 6-0, West Stokes and McMichael are 5-1 and Southern is 4-2. West Stokes has won five straight, but those teams are a combined 6-24. Reidsville's smallest margin of victory this season is 32.

Eastern Guilford (6-0) at Atkins (2-4)

You might have guessed Atkins has yet to beat a team with a winning record. But how about this: Neither has Eastern. Of course, the way the Wildcats have played, it might not have mattered if they were lined up against the Detroit Lions (Bad example.).

Also: Glenn (2-4) at Andrews (3-2); Alleghany (3-3) at Bishop McGuinness (4-2); Thomasville (7-0) at West Montgomery (3-3); Carver (5-1) at Southwest Guilford (0-6)
