KERNERSVILLE (MCT) — Town officials approved an annexation agreement with Greensboro on Tuesday night.
Under the agreement, the town of Kernersville cannot annex areas east of Bunker Hill Road in western Guilford County, and the city of Greensboro cannot annex areas west of Bunker Hill Road.
The Greensboro City Council approved the agreement on Sept. 2. This is the first annexation agreement between the two towns.
Officials in Kernersville and Greensboro said they had no plans to annex any areas in western Guilford. The town has a policy of voluntary annexations of areas around its borders, Morgan said.
The boundaries of Kernersville and Greensboro have moved closer to each other as both municipalities recently have annexed areas west and east of Bunker Hill Road. Additional commercial development may help spur growth in those areas.
Kernersville has annexation agreements with Oak Ridge, Walkertown, Winston-Salem and High Point. Greensboro has annexation agreements with Oak Ridge, Summerfield, High Point and Jamestown.
Bob Morgan, Greensboro's deputy city manager, said that city and Kernersville officials worked on a boundary-line agreement for three years.
"It allows for good planning between the two municipalities," Morgan said. "They will know where they can extend services, and we will know we can extend services."
