GREENSBORO - The driver in a crash that killed a Southern Guilford High School football player has been charged.
A Highway Patrol sergeant said today that Deandre Thomas, 18, of 5829 Stoney Glen Loop in Greensboro, has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.
Troopers said Thomas was the driver of a 1998 Toyota Camry that was traveling north on Interstate 85 in Davidson County when it ran off the right-hand side of the road and struck several trees at 8:33 a.m. Saturday.
The wreck resulted in the death of Cameron "Scotty" Wayne, a senior at Southern Guilford. Three other people in the car, including Thomas, a freshman at N.C. A&T and Wayne's cousin, were injured.
George Kevin Washington, an A&T freshman, remained in critical condition Monday at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Darren Garcia, a Southern Guilford senior, has been updated to good condition.
The hospital had no record Monday for Thomas, who was listed in good condition Saturday night. Troopers said they believe he had been released from the hospital, but could not confirm that information.
The Highway Patrol report indicated that Thomas apparently fell asleep while driving.
