GREENSBORO - Page steamrolled its way to a huge halftime lead on homecoming night. Unfortunately, the Pirates still had to play the final two quarters.

Davie County overcame a 26-point deficit, forced overtime and blocked the Pirates extra point in the extra session to come away with a 50-49 win.

The loss evened Page's record at 3-3, with all three losses coming to teams ranked in the state AP polls.

"The offense didn't execute (in the second half). We couldn't sustain drives," said Page coach Kevin Gillespie. "So the defense was on the field too much. We had guys in position to make plays and we didn't make them."

The Pirates looked invincible in the first half, making big play after big play on their way to a 34-8 halftime lead.

The War Eagles came roaring back in the second half and eventually took a 36-34 lead on a fumble return for a touchdown by linebacker Santana Arnold with 11:35 to play in the fourth quarter. The fumble was caused by Davie defensive end Justin Miller, who wrapped up Page quarterback Will Newman as he tried to pitch the ball.

The Pirates tied the game again on a safety when the snap went over the Davie punter's head and throught the end zone. But on the ensuing posession, Newman was intercepted on a fourth-and-three.

The War Eagles converted that turnover into a 20-yard touchdown run by James Mayfield with 2:56 to play, giving them a 43-36 lead.

But the Pirates still weren't done.

Newman converted a fourth-and-nine when he hit running back Perry Fryer with a swing pass that Fryer turned upfield for a 32-yard gain. Two players later, Brad Workinger took a short pass and dove in the end zone to tie the game again at 43.

Davie was unable to do anything with its final possession and game went to overtime.

The Pirates won the toss and went on offense. It only took two plays for Newman to score on a quarterback keeper from a yard out. But the extra point was blocked when a surge of Davie linemen came straight up the middle.

The War Eagles fumbled on their first offensive play in overtime, but Mayfield covered it up and Davie still had life. On the next play, Davie quarterback Zach Illing, who passed for 363 yards, threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Joe Watson.

There was no doubt about Michael Rowe's extra point as is split the uprights and the Davie fans started celebrating.

"We came out in the second half and made mistake after mistake," Gillespie said. "The kids played hard. We still had a chance to win the game and it just came down to an extra point. I told them we can build on this and get better or we can throw in the towel. I believe these guys will be back Monday ready to go."

Davie County coach Doug Illing said he challenged his team at halftime because he knows they weren't giving 100 percent.

"I don't know what we were doing, but it wasn't football," Illing said. "It was simple; we had to fight in the trenches and block people and tackle people."
