GREENSBORO - The streak continues.

Smith scrapped and clawed for 48 minutes, but in the end, there were just too many mistakes to overcome in Friday night's 32-12 loss to visiting North Forsyth.

The Golden Eagles (0-6) entered looking to end their 26-game skid in their final nonconference game before stepping into 4-A Metro play.

The Vikings of the 4-A Central Piedmont had other plans. North Forsyth (3-3) intercepted Smith QB Dontrell Lawton on the first play from scrimmage - which led to a touchdown - then repeated the process on the Golden Eagles' next possession to take a 13-0 lead.

But the Golden Eagles didn't panic. B.J. Briley capped a 14-play, 80-yard march with a 5-yard TD run with just under 10 minutes to go in the opening half to make it 14-6.

The score remained the same until halftime, giving the youthful Golden Eagles faith in halting the losing streak.

Smith's defense forced North Forsyth to punt to open the second half, but the Golden Eagles fumbled the return back to the Vikings.

Smith's Demarius Bowe lived every defensive lineman's dream when he intercepted a screen pass near midfield to give the Golden Eagles their best field position of the night. But the drive stalled, as many others did, at the hands of North Forsyth's defense, which yielded less than 200 total yards on the night.

Smith coach Rodney Brewington said North Forsyth had the best defensive line his team has faced this season. That, mixed with the youthful mistakes, didn't bode well for the Golden Eagles, who committed five turnovers on the night.

"I'm proud of these guys," Brewington said. "They're playing juniors and seniors and they're in the game ... They have nothing to be ashamed of."

North Forsyth's Jamel Johnson had 130 yards and three touchdowns to pace the Vikings. His third-quarter TD made it 20-6, but Briley ran for his second touchdown just 1:36 later to keep Smith within one possession.

The Vikings scored on their next possession however, and the Golden Eagles ran out of answers as North Forsyth's defense flattened the running game in the fourth quarter.

The loss frustrated Briley, one of the few seniors on the team.

"We're a better team than North Forsyth," Briley said, "we're just not as disciplined."

Brewington, in his first year as Smith's coach, understands how Briley and the seniors feel.

"Of course it's tough (for the seniors) because they've been here the entire time. But if we keep pushing hard and working hard, we're going to get there," he said.

Meanwhile, they try and put the dreaded 'S' word in the back of their minds.

"There is no streak. The only streak I've got is tomorrow," Brewington said. "Every day we want to work hard, we don't count any losing streak."
