BURLINGTON (MCT) — A Burlington man has been charged with robbing $1,460 from employees of Randolph Bank in Mebane after two weeks earlier being foiled in an attempt to rob an Elon doctor's office.

Mebane police said Robert Umstead Slade Jr., 33, of Simmons Court in Burlington, was charged Wednesday with common law robbery for the Sept. 9 robbery of Randolph Bank on Mebane-Oaks Road.

According to police, Slade walked into the bank around 2 p.m. and demanded cash from bank employees before fleeing on foot. Police said video surveillance and witness statements led them to a suspect.

Slade was charged in connection with a Sept. 22 robbery attempt at Alamance Family Practice on Haggard Avenue. A witness saw Slade get into a white Pontiac Grand Am and drive off with another man.

Slade was arrested shortly after that incident and charged with attempted common law robbery. His combined bond on both charges is $350,000.

Nichlaus Warren Nelson, 31, of Little Avenue in Gibsonville, also was charged with attempted common law robbery. His bond was set at $100,000.

Both men are being held in the Alamance County jail.
