Forward Zack Schilawski had the fourth multi-goal game of his career, and junior goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald recorded his sixth shutout of the season as the top-ranked Wake Forest defeated Elon 3-0 in front of 1,663 fans Wednesday at Rhodes Stadium in Elon.
The Deacons (9-0-0) out-shot the Phoenix 21-5, including an 11-1 advantage in the first half. Wake had 10 shots on goal, compared to three attempts on frame for Elon (2-7-1) .
Schilawski led the way offensively, scoring twice and taking a career-high six shots. Cody Arnoux also scored for Wake.
Fitzgerald made three saves in the game while Phoenix goalkeeper Clint Irwin made seven saves in the contest.
HPU: Freshman Katie Taber scored her first career goal in leading the Panthers (5-2-4, 1-0-0) to a 1-0 win at UNC-Asheville (4-7-1, 2-1-0) in the Big South Conference opener for HPU.
UNCG: Greg McNamara scored 4:20 into the second half for Davidson for the only goal.
GUILFORD: The Quakers and Lynchburg College battled to a 0-0 draw in an ODAC match at Haworth Field.
GREENSBORO: Ben Norman scored on a header in the 88th minute as Greensboro (6-3-1) defeated Montreat 3-2 at Pride Field. Sean Fogleson earned the asssist on the game-winner.
The Pride rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit.

HITOMS: head coach Matt McCay has decided not to return to the HiToms in 2009. An assistant coach at UNC, McCay led the HiToms to their third consecutive Coastal Plain League Championship in 2008 and their fifth Western Division title in the last six years (42-20).

UNCG: Men's basketball coach Mike Dement announced the appointment of Ben Thompson as director of Boperations.
Thompson replaces Tripp Pendergast, who resigned this summer to become an assistant coach at St. Andrew's College.
volleyball
GREENSBORO: Kacie Hyatt had 22 kills as the Pride (11-10, 7-2) won a USA South match at Averett 3-1 (25-14, 25-23, 23-25, 28-26).
GUILFORD: The Quakers fell at ODAC rival Sweet Briar 25-19, 25-23, 23-25, 25-18. Anna Miller paced the Quakers with 12 kills. Courtney Kozar added 11 putaways and Mary Moody had six kills.
