GREENSBORO — Here’s the latest scuttlebutt: Downtown efforts to get cigarette litter off the streets haven’t gone up in smoke.

The program, financed by grants from Keep America Beautiful, has reduced smoking-related trash by nearly 70 percent.

Nationally, other cities average only 30 percent.

“We’re proud that we exceeded ... that,” said Lee Mortensen, vice president of Downtown Greensboro Inc. “We can see this program expanding.”

Since May, DGI has focused efforts on Friendly Avenue and Church, Elm, Greene, Market and Washington streets.

DGI put up 10 cigarette butt receptacles throughout the area, with more available for placement.

To have a receptacle installed downtown, call 379-0060, Ext. 21, or send an e-mail to info@downtowngreensboro.net.
