GREENSBORO — An abandoned suitcase and cardboard box led to the closure of several downtown streets late Monday night, as police investigated what they thought might have been a bomb.

The only thing in the suitcase, Greensboro police said today, was clothes.

The ordeal began around 9:45 p.m. when someone noticed a black rollaway suitcase and cardboard box on the sidewalk near the corner of Washington Street and East Davie Street.

Police closed off several roads for two hours as the department's bomb squad investigated using a robot and a officer in a bomb suit.

At around 11:40 p.m., crews determined that neither the suitcase nor box posed a threat. Police said they turned in the clothes to the lost-and-found at The Depot nearby.
