REIDSVILLE — A man who served time in prison in connection with the shooting death of a teenager more than three years ago was shot and killed early Thursday.
His death is the city’s second homicide this year.
Police found 20-year-old Lawrence “Lee-Lee” Hayes of Reidsville unconscious and bleeding on a sidewalk on Washington Avenue.
A police report said Hayes had a gunshot wound to the head.
Eric Quinell Turner Jr., 22, of 106 Cherry St., whom police described as Hayes’ acquaintance, was found nearby with a gunshot wound to the leg.
Police received calls just before 2 a.m. about shots in the area of Washington Avenue. Police said bullets hit two houses, but no one inside the houses was injured.
Police Capt. Guilio Dattero said the shootings may have started as a disagreement between two groups. He would not comment on whether the shooting was gang-related.
Hayes was no stranger to police. He was charged in connection with the shooting death of 16-year-old LeCharleston “L.C.” Broadnax, who was shot at a Reidsville intersection on Feb. 15, 2005. Broadnax died a month later.
Hayes spent less than a year in prison on the principal charge of assault inflicting serious bodily injury, according to the N.C. Department of Correction. He was released in July 2006.
He was convicted in February of possession of a firearm by a felon and was released July 22, according to the Department of Correction.
Lawrence Hayes’ brother, Bro Lovez Hayes, also was charged in connection with Broadnax’s death. He is serving a minimum five-year sentence for manslaughter, according to the Department of Correction.
When asked whether Hayes’ homicide could have been a revenge killing, Dattero said, “Don’t have any idea right now, but it would be certainly worth examining that as a possible motive at some point.”
Police found shell casings at the shooting site and four cell phones, according to the police report, and they have received calls about people of interest in the case.
Dattero would not disclose the hospital where Turner was being treated but said he is expected to be released within the next few days.
The State Bureau of Investigation is assisting Reidsville police with the case. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Greg Harris at 347-2335 or Lt. Wendell Neville at 347-2343.
