Freshman delivers goal to lift North Carolina over Elon

Freshman center back Sheanon Williams' unassisted goal in the 81st minute proved to the game-winner as host North Carolina claimed a 2-1 victory over Elon at Fetzer Field on Wednesday night.

Senior forward Brian Shriver also scored for the Tar Heels, who got back in the win column following their first loss of the season last weekend at Boston College.

Jacob Wescoe made five saves for North Carolina (6-1-1) and preserved the win with a penalty kick stop in the 86th minute.

Justin Wyatt scored the lone goal for the Phoenix (2-5-1) with an assist from Erfan Imeni.

CHARLOTTE 1, UNCG 0: Chris Salvaggione scored the only goal of the match in the 75th minute as host Charlotte snapped UNCG's four-game unbeaten streak at Transamerica Field.

Chad Janda made seven saves for the Spartans (3-4-1). Charlotte (6-1-0) held a 17-7 advantage in shots, including 12-3 in the second half, and 5-0 in corner kicks.

UNCG will return to action Saturday night. The Spartans will host Brown at UNCG Soccer Stadium in the Homecoming match. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN 5, GUILFORD 0: Brandon Massie scored two second-half goals as visiting Virginia Wesleyan College beat Guilford in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game.

The Quakers (0-7, 0-2 ODAC) continue league play when they travel to Randolph-Macon College on Saturday.

HIGH POINT 2, N.C. STATE 1 (OT): Senior Chris Shrum headed home the game-winning goal with 56 seconds remaining in overtime to lift High Point (4-3-1) to a victory over host N.C. State (1-5-1). Sophomore Scott Rojo picked up the assist on Shrum's goal.

TENNIS

ISNER ADVANCES: Greensboro's John Isner defeated Serbia's Filip Krajinovic 6-2, 6-4 in the second round of the ATP Challenger series in Lubbock, Texas.

Up next for Isner is American Alex Bogomolov, a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Mexico's Luis Manuel Flores.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS NIGHT: When Greensboro College plays host to USA South Conference football rival Maryville on Saturday at Jamieson Stadium it will be Support our Troops night. All active and veteran armed forces personnel and their families will be admitted free with a valid military identification. Before the 7 p.m. game, two armed forces veterans -- Rodney Beasley and Ladale Benson -- on the Greensboro roster will be honored.

Regular admission for the game is $5 for general admission, $3 for seniors and students with an ID and free for fans 12 and younger, Greensboro College students with an ID and Greensboro College faculty and staff. The game will be Webcast at www.ustream.tv/gcpride.

VOLLEYBALL

GUILFORD 3, RANDOLPH 1: Anna Miller made eight kills and Stephanie Blankenship added seven kills and six blocks in Guilford's Old Dominion Athletic Conference volleyball victory at Randolph College.

The Quakers' (3-13, 1-3 ODAC) first league win ended a 10-match losing streak with the 21-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-16 victory.

Taylor Phillips set up 31 assists and Bethany Hawks had six digs.

UNCG 3, APPALACHIAN STATE 1: After falling in the first set, UNCG came back to win the final three as the Spartans defeated host Appalachian State at the Holmes Center. Set scores were 17-25, 29-27, 25-16, 27-25.

Branagan Fuller had 16 kills and 15 digs for the Spartans (9-5, 1-0 Southern Conference), and Kaitlyn Nortz had 12 kills. Lisa Fawell contributed 26 assists and Kimiko Naito added 22.

ELON 3, HIGH POINT 2: Host Elon ended High Point's eight-match streak with the victory at Alumni Gym. Set scores were 27-25, 25-23, 14-25, 20-25, 15-9.

Traci Stewart led Elon with 16 kills and 13 digs. Lindsay Raus led High Point with 18 kills.
