GREENSBORO - For the second week in a row, Southeast Guilford pulled out a win in the final minute.
The Falcons marched 83 yards to set up a last-second field goal by Terrance Topps to pull out an unlikely 10-8 victory over visiting Northwest Guilford. Topps, who also quarterbacks for the Falcons, made several big plays on the 14-play drive, including a 19-yard run.
Southeast mixed in runs by Tivon Clark, who had the final 31 yards on the drive before Topps booted a 20-yard field goal for the game-winner.
Northwest dominated much of the game but had trouble with fumbles and missed red-zone opportunities. The Vikings out-gained the Falcons 195-20 in the first half, but trailed 7-2 at intermission.
"I have never seen an offense play so good and not score a touchdown," Northwest coach Joe Woodruff said.
Northwest moved the ball well on its first possession but fumbled it away at the Southeast 20-yard line. On the ensuing possession, Southeast gave up a safety on a bad snap.
The Vikings moved the ball to the Falcons 11-yard line on the next drive but turned the ball over on downs after passing up a field goal attempt on 4th-and-11.
It was more of the same in the second quarter, as a fumble ended Northwest's first drive. This time the turnover led to seven points for Southeast, as Kenyata Robinson picked up the loose ball and ran 82 yards for the score.
In the second half, a Falcons turnover led to the only touchdown by the Vikings. One play after recovering a fumble, Sean Pless took a handoff up the middle 40 yards for the go-ahead score.
The Falcons put together a drive into Vikings territory on their next possession but turned it over after deciding to go for it on 4th-and-12 from the Northwest 37. But the defense forced a three-and-out and set up Topps' and Clark's heroics on the final drive.
"I'm proud of our kids," Southeast coach Fritz Hessenthaler said. "The bottom line is they got ahead and they're big, strong and a real physical football team. Our kids stepped up and won the ball game by being physical ourselves and running it where we need to run it."
