GREENSBORO - Police this morning identified the man found dead in a High Point Road parking lot Tuesday night as 20-year-old Jamar Lamont Stimpson.
Greensboro police responded just after 6 p.m. to reports of a shooting at the parking lot of the La Bamba Mexican Restaurant at 2702 High Point Road.
Officers arrived to find Stimpson's body in the parking lot. He died from an apparent gunshot wound, police said.
But after hearing witness accounts, police still were unsure late Tuesday night where the man was shot.
"We don't know if it happened at the location on High Point Road or somewhere else," police Chief Tim Bellamy said. "We got ... from numerous callers that a body was pulled from a car and dumped in the parking lot."
None of the witnesses reported hearing gunshots, Bellamy said.
Investigators are reviewing the surveillance video from nearby businesses, with the hope it will show exactly what happened, Bellamy said late Tuesday.
An autopsy has been scheduled to shed more light on how he died.
The only information available about a suspect was that witnesses reported a small, cream-colored, four-door vehicle leaving the crime scene, Bellamy said.
Bellamy said police have dealt with various problems in the 2700 block of High Point Road, but most of the problems are related to prostitution, drug activity and burglaries.
The death is Greensboro's 18th homicide of the year. That figure is four to five homicides fewer than this point last year, Bellamy said. The city had 31 homicides in 2007.
Police ask people with information to call Crime Stoppers at 373-1000.
