GREENSBORO - Police are working to identify a man whose body was found in a High Point Road parking lot Tuesday evening. They also want to know who killed him and where.
Greensboro police responded to the parking lot of the La Bamba Mexican Restaurant at 2702 High Point Road just after 6 p.m. to reports of a shooting.
Officers arrived to find the body of a black male in his early-to-mid 20s laying in the parking lot who died from an apparent gunshot wound, said Police Chief Tim Bellamy.
But with various witness accounts of the incident, police were still unsure late Tuesday night where the man was shot.
"We don't know if it happened at the location on High Point Road or somewhere else," Bellamy said.
"We got ... from numerous callers that a body was pulled from a car and dumped in the parking lot."
None of the witnesses reported hearing gunshots, Bellamy said.
Bellamy said late Tuesday that investigators are reviewing surveillance video from businesses nearby, with the hope it will show what exactly happened.
Capt. Janice Rogers said the victim had no identification on him and an autopsy is scheduled to confirm his identity and shed more light on how he died.
The only suspect information available was that witnesses reported a small four-door vehicle leaving the scene, believed to be a cream color, Bellamy said.
It was not immediately known how many people were inside that vehicle.
Bellamy said the police have dealt with various problems in the 2700 block of High Point Road in recent memory, but most of the problems are related to prostitution, drug activity and burglaries.
The death is Greensboro's 17th homicide of the year. That figure is four to five homicides less than from this point last year, Bellamy said. The city had a total of 31 homicides in 2007.
Anyone with information on the case is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 373-1000.
