The Guilford County Board of Elections started accepting absentee ballot requests and mailing those ballots today.

Add that voting option with one-stop voting — also called early voting — beginning Oct. 16, and the Nov. 4 Election Day, there's no shortage of options for voters looking to punch a ballot this fall. What to know:

Absentee voting

Best for: People who can't get to the polls in-person. Good for shut-ins and people living outside of Guilford County during the election such as military, businesspeople and college students.

How to: Absentee voters must be registered first, then fill in a ballot request form that can be printed from the elections Web site, www.guilfordelections.org, or mailed by calling the board of elections at 641-3836. People living outside the country can visit www.fvap.gov for voting information.

When: Requests for absentee ballots started Monday and run through Oct. 28. Exceptions to the deadline can be made for sickness or disability.

Early voting

Best for: People who want to avoid Election Day lines or can't go vote in person on Nov. 4; and those who are not registered to vote in Guilford County.

How to: Show up at the elections office in Greensboro or High Point, or any other early voting spot with a valid state-issued ID card. New voters are registered, and then go vote as they would on Election Day. Already registered voters do just as they would on Election Day.

When: One stop voting runs Oct. 16 to Nov. 1.

Election Day

Best for: Voters who enjoy the experience of voting on Election Day and are already registered.

How to: Be sure that you are registered to vote before the deadline of Oct. 10, a card will be mailed to you telling you where to find your local polling location on Election Day.

When: Tuesday, Nov. 4.
