Update: Janitor charged with sexually assaulting girl at Greensboro school
GREENSBORO - A janitor at Joyner Elementary School was arrested Wednesday and charged with sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl at the school.
Joel Van Stephenson, 55, of 2105 Tarrywood Drive is charged with assaulting the child over the summer while she was taking an English as a Second Language class, said Capt. Janice Rogers of the Greensboro Police Department.
The child told her mother about the incident this week, Rogers said.
Stephenson was terminated Wednesday from his job with Guilford County Schools, according to a statement from the district. He began work for the district in January 1986.
Stephenson has been charged with one count of taking indecent liberties with a minor and a first-degree sex offense.
He was being held on a $100,000 bond at the Guilford County jail in Greensboro Wednesday night..
