DURHAM — A 50-year-old Greensboro woman was killed after she was struck by an Amtrak train Tuesday morning in Durham.

Durham police identified the victim as Carla Diane Bagley, who previously worked at the News & Record as a features editor and People and Places editor, on the copy desk and as a reporter. She left the newspaper in 2006.

The southbound Piedmont Amtrack train heading for Charlotte struck Bagley about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday on Dillard Street near Pettigrew Street, according to Durham police.

Police said it appears that Bagley apparently stepped on the train tracks and that her death does not appear to be suspicious. It was not immediately clear why Bagley was in Durham or why she was on the tracks.

Sgt. Jack Cates of the Durham Police Department said police are awaiting results of an autopsy being conducted at the state Medical Examiner's office in Chapel Hill. Information on funeral services is not yet available.

The Herald-Sun of Durham contributed to this report.
