Guilford County Schools swore in newly appointed Superintendent Maurice Green at the central office just after dawn this morning.
Green was hired this summer to replace Terry Grier, who left the district in March to oversee the San Diego Unified School District. Green will spend today visiting four schools and meeting with employees. Green said visiting schools will be a key part of what he does as superintendent.
An attorney by training, Green left law several years ago to join the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system where he last held the position of deputy superintendent. Green's lack of classroom experience has been a major concern for some.
Green vowed to address the concern, even publicly considering working in some classrooms in an undetermined capacity. State statutes appear to prevent that.
Green also announced this morning he will begin a blog to keep parents and employees informed and provide an opportunity for public input.
Green signed a four-year contract with a base salary of $250,000.
