Guilford wins Souper Bowl

GREENSBORO -- Guilford College jumped out to a 16-point halftime lead and held on for a 22-12 win over Greensboro College in the 12th annual Souper Bowl on Saturday night at Herb Appenzeller Field in the opening game for both teams.

The Quakers won the toss and elected to receive, and they hit the Pride with trickery on the first play from scrimmage. Josh Vogelbach pitched the ball to Chad Kastor who tossed it back to Vogelbach. The senior found a wide open Kevin Vaughn for a 60-yard touchdown pass and a 6-0 lead 19 seconds into the game.

"That was a planned play by our offensive coordinator Mark Hargis, and it was well designed," Guilford coach Kevin Kiesel said. "We run a lot of those flanker screens. That's meat-and-potatoes for us. We figured they would bite up on that, and we went for it sure enough."

The Quakers moved the ball at will in the first half as Vogelbach completed 81 percent of his passes. The only trouble for Guilford came with turnovers: they committed four in the first half alone.

The Pride took advantage of an interception in Guilford territory to tie the game. Quarterback Mike Caparaso scored on an 11-yard run up the middle.

But that was the highlight for Greensboro in the first half. The Pride managed 58 yards of total offense in the opening 30 minutes and was unable to take advantage of other scoring opportunities.

"In the first half, the biggest thing that's killing me now is that we didn't create points out of the turnovers we had," Greensboro coach Neal Mitchell said. "We had opportunities to score points on a short field and we didn't do that. I can't get that off my mind right now."

After two more turnovers by the Quakers, Guilford finally held onto the ball and scored on an eight-play drive that ended with Vogelbach connecting on an 8-yard TD pass to Kastor.

With 84 seconds before the half, the Quakers jumped out to a 22-6 lead when Justin Parker scored on a 10-yard run.

The Pride came out more focused after intermission and kept the Quakers off the scoreboard in the second half.

"In the second half, we didn't change any things," Mitchell said. "I think it was just first-game things. Their offense is tough to replicate. By getting some experience under our belt, we were able to execute our side a little better."

Torrey Lowe, Greensboro's all-purpose star who tallied four touchdowns a season ago versus Guilford, hauled in a short touchdown pass from Caparaso to bring the Pride within 10 points late in the fourth quarter.

But the Guilford defense came up big in the final quarter to hold the lead. The Quakers notched three interceptions in the fourth quarter, including two by game MVP Danny Langston.

Vogelbach, who threw for 432 yards and five touchdowns in last year's Souper Bowl, completed 30 of 40 passes for 340 yards and two TDs.

The two teams raised 8,887 cans of food to be shared by the Servant Center of Greensboro and the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina.

Guilford won the Souper Bowl for the fourth straight time and now leads the annual series of Greensboro's two Division III schools by a 7-5 margin.
