Why Western Guilford won: The Hornets orchestrated a 75-yard drive and scored on a one-yard run by Brandon Easter with just over three minutes remaining. Easter's second score of the game gave Western its first win of the season and painfully extended the Golden Eagles' losing streak to 24.
"Just like last week, neither team really deserved to lose," said Western head coach Chris Causey, whose team (1-2) was on the other side of a 14-13 decision against Northwest Guilford last week.
The Eagles (0-3) scored first on a fumble return and led 13-7 after a third quarter score. They went for two after the second touchdown but were stopped on a bootleg by Western's Jordan Waters.
The Hornets got the ball back with about 4:30 remaining, and quarterback Cory McKenna wasted no time getting them down the field. Smith then turned the ball over on downs trying to rally back.
"Our kids stayed positive the whole game," Causey said. "There wasn't any doubt we were going to make plays when we had to to win the game. ... We needed a win. It takes a win like this to get you going."
