GREENSBORO - For the Southeast Guilford Falcons, it's all about physical football.
One week after a disappointing 21-point loss, Southeast controlled both lines of scrimmage and came away with a 41-0 victory Friday over the host Southwest Guilford Cowboys.
"We played physical football tonight," Falcons coach Fritz Hessenthaler said." Obviously this is a game of hits, and you've got to be physical to win. It looked like our kids bought into it more this week."
Hessenthaler praised his offensive line, which broke open big holes that led to 348 yards rushing for Southeast. Tivon Clark led the way with 226 yards rushing and four touchdowns. Alex Harrison came on to rush for 94 yards and a score.
But as dominating as the offense was, the game turned on a defensive stand late in the second quarter. The Cowboys drove to the Falcons' 1-yard line but failed to score on two straight rushes and turned the ball over.
"That was a 14-point swing in a matter of about 3 minutes," Hessenthaler said. "The kids stayed low and really came off the ball. It really became physical at that point. I think those 98 yards were rush yards."
Actually, Southeast did throw in one pass play on the ensuing eight-play drive, which ended with a 6-yard touchdown run by Kenyata Robinson and a 14-0 Southeast lead at the half.
The Falcons dominated play in the second half. They held the Cowboys to two first downs after intermission and forced two turnovers.
"We're trying to become more disciplined at each position with kids understanding their assignment," Hessenthaler said. "The game is about emotion and physicality, but just as important as those two things is understanding your assignment."
