Angie Besecker loves finding new life in old things, so it's fitting that her home-decorating store found a home in a building that's been around for centuries.
"I've always been drawn to nature, botanicals, that kind of design," said Besecker, who opened her shop, Dwelling, a few weeks ago. "Modern rustic seemed to fit with this 200-year-old building."
Dwelling gives new life to discarded stuff, such as recycled washtubs converted into mirrors and wine stoppers made from recycled glass door knobs.
The items she carries have an eco-friendly ethos, including organic bath and body products, soy candles and jewelry made from recycled vinyl records.
"There are so many ways to give back to the environment," Besecker said. "I'm a design studio, but I'm also trying to lead people along the path of doing things in their home that are environmentally friendly."
Dwelling, located at 1000-B Highway 150 West, is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays or by appointment.
Arthur's Fine Shoes moves to Winstead Commons
Arthur's Fine Shoes has hopscotched across the Gate City during its decades in business.
The shoe store that started downtown has found a new home in Winstead Commons, the new mixed-use development at the corner of Martinsville and Pisgah Church roads in Greensboro.
"Obviously, we thought this would be a better location," said owner Stan Neerman, noting the mix of condos and retail shops that make up the three-story complex. "This corner, with Fresh Market across the street, it's a high-traffic area."
Since moving from the old location on Lawndale Drive, Neerman said business has been good. And he's anticipating even more customers once his retail neighbors are all in place.
"You have to have good neighbors," he said. "We all help each other with traffic."
Other retailers opening in Winstead Commons, located at 2920 Martinsville Road, include Port City Java, Jack Cecil, MOD - Materials of Design, Twinkie Pinkie Salon and Wild Birds Unlimited.
