GIBSONVILLE - After a 35-14 win over Southeast Guilford on Friday night, Eastern Guilford's Gerrod Herbin made no mistake about the Wildcats' intentions for the season.

"We're here to play. We're here to win," Herbin said. "We're starting a new tradition here. We've got good coaches and good players."

Herbin, who only had three carries at halftime, took control in the second half. He had a 62-yard screen pass for a touchdown and finished the night with a 47-yard touchdown run. In all, he had 122 yards rushing, the lone, long reception and three touchdowns.

"We're an option team and some of the plays that were called in the first half it is up to the quarterback to make the read. It just ended up that (Herbin) didn't get the ball on those plays," said Scott Loosemore, Eastern Guilford's coach. "In the second half, we called plays that were designed for him. He's an explosive player. You never know what is going to happen when he gets the football."

After leading 14-7 at halftime, the Wildcats took control in the third quarter with two long drives culminated in big plays. Eastern used seven straight running plays to score the first time. Quarterback Jason Davis ran 32 yards on a draw play to put the ball in the end zone as the Wildcats went up 21-7. On their next possession, Herbin took a screen pass, cut through four defenders and outran everybody else to the end zone as Eastern took a 28-7 lead.

"My coach told me that if I just keep on running, nobody would be able to catch me," Herbin said of the screen play.

Loosemore said the fast start in the second half was really the difference in the game.

"We came right back to start the second half and scored quickly," Loosemore said. "That's what won the game for us. We did the same thing (starting fast) last week. This is the first time we have been 2-0 since '99 or 2000 and we feel good about that."

Southeast outgained the Wildcats in total yards 122-74 in the first half, but had four fumbles and three holding penalties - one that cost them a touchdown run by Harrison on the first play from scrimmage. The falcons did recover all four fumbles recovered all four fumbles.

"That's football," said Fritz Hessnethaler, Southeast's coach. "What really matters is what you do on the next play. We let those miscues hurt us more than they should have."
