OCRACOKE (AP) — The National Park Service says visitors to Cape Hatteras National Seashore will see shifting beach closures as endangered birds and turtles clear out of nests.
The park service said Thursday the closures will continue in places through September, but pointed out that more beaches have opened. Vehicle traffic is allowed from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
A park service statement urged visitors to carefully watch boundaries that are marked on the sand with posts, signs and string.
The latest beach to reopen was the ocean shoreline at South Point on Ocracoke Island. It reopened Monday.
Closures began in the spring as part of an agreement to end a lawsuit brought by environmental groups against the park service.
