Guilford College adds 5 football assistants

Guilford College has added five assistant football coaches and promoted Joe Mitskas to defensive coordinator, the school announced. Brad Davis, Matt Hutchings, Bracy Maynard and Shawn Thomas have jointed Kevin Kiesel's staff. In addition, senior David Hayes will serve as a student assistant coach. Mitskas assumes the defensive coordinator's post in his second Guilford season. He replaces Michael Vite after Vite took the head coaching post at the Apprentice School last spring.

GOLF

U.S. AMATEUR: Robbie Fillmore, a junior at Brigham Young, shot 5-under 65 to win the stroke-play portion of the U.S. Amateur. The lowest score in two days of qualifying came on the No. 4 course at Pinehurst and followed Fillmore's opening 69 on Pinehurst No. 2, giving him a total of 6-under 134. Fillmore leads the group of 64 players who will start the match-play portion Wednesday. The final two qualifiers will be determined in a playoff among 26 players who tied at 5-over 145. UNC golfers Barden Berry and Kevin O'Connell advanced to match play. Duke's Spencer Anderson, Clark Klaasen, Adam Long and Michael Quagliano failed to advance.

SOUTH CAROLINA OPEN: Simon McGreal of Greensboro is among the six leaders at 4-under 68 after the first round of the South Carolina Open at The Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor, S.C.

N.C. MID-AMATEUR: Sherrill Britt of West End shot a 6-under par 66 to take medalist honors in the 15th North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship sectional qualifier. The top 21 players and ties advance onto the North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro on Sept. 12-14.

HERMANN TROPHY WATCH: Wake Forest placed three players on the Hermann Trophy watch list: Cody Arnoux, Sam Cronin and Marcus Tracy. Mike Grella of Duke also made the list.

WAKE FOREST 5, WOFFORD 1: Senior forward Marcus Tracy scored three goals to help Wake Forest win its exhibition opener.

women's SOCCER

WAKE FOREST 5, VANDERBILT 0: Sophomore Amanda Barasha had six saves to lead Wake Forest in a preseason match at Spry Stadium. Junior forward Jill Hutchinson scored two goals.

VASSAR COLLEGE: Trinity High School alum Josh King has been named assistant men's basketball coach at Vassar College. King will be in charge of recruiting, scouting, on-the-floor coaching, and player development.
