GREENSBORO -- After Drew Weaver watched his seven-foot putt fall into the hole for a birdie at No. 18, he dropped his head in frustration.
If you knew how the rest of the former High Point Central star's round had gone Friday at Sedgefield Country Club, you'd understand.
Weaver, a rising senior at Virginia Tech, finished the first two rounds at 2-under, one stroke short of making his first cut in a pro tournament. Afterward, it wasn't the birdies on the final two holes of the Wyndham Championship that he was thinking about -- Weaver also curled in a 21-footer on No. 17 -- but rather all the putts that didn't fall on the first 16.
"I had so many chances," he said. "It was a very frustrating day."
Weaver began the day at 1-under and proceeded to hit the ball as well as he has in a long time. The 2007 British Amateur champion's iron play was particularly strong, giving him plenty of makeable putts. He just didn't make them.
Weaver rattled off the what-ifs: a six-footer on No. 1; a 10-footer on No. 3; no birdies on either par-5; 15-footers on Nos. 8 and 9; and an eight-footer on No. 13 that was particularly galling.
"It was just one of those things," he said.
If there's a silver lining to Weaver's dark cloud it's that now he can turn his full attention to the U.S. Amateur Championship, which begins Monday at Pinehurst. He plans to leave this morning and play two practice rounds before teeing off at 7:50 a.m. Monday.
"I like where my game is going into next week," Weaver said. "That's definitely a plus."
Maybe next week, when Weaver sinks a birdie putt, he'll be celebrating rather than wondering what might have been.
