Through 54 holes, Grimsley High School graduate Carl Pettersson is enjoying one of the PGA Tour's finest performances in four decades.
Pettersson, who played college golf at N.C. State, is at 19-under-par 191 entering today's final round. That's the best in the 69-year history of the Greensboro event by four strokes, but it's only enough for a two-shot lead over Scott McCarron, who holed out from a bunker on 18 and also surpassed the previous 54-hole low in the event. Jesper Parnevik held it with a 195 in 1999.
Pettersson's total is good for the fourth-lowest anywhere on the Tour since 1970. Tommy Armour III in 2003 (Texas Open), Mark Calcavecchia in 2001 (Phoenix Open) and John Cook in 1996 (St. Jude Classic) have the only statistically superior efforts.
As impressive as Pettersson's 66 was on Saturday, it was nearly better. He three-putted from six feet and took a bogey on 15, and his 20-footer on 18 came up one revolution short of a birdie.
