Mental hospital in Broughton loses accreditation

Friday, August 15, 2008

MORGANTON (AP) - The state mental hospital in Morganton has lost its bid to remain an accredited facility.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services said Friday that Broughton Hospital lost an appeal seeking to retain its accreditation from the Joint Commission, a national accreditation agency.

The decision may impact Broughton's ability to receive payment through some private insurance companies but will not affect the hospital's Medicaid and Medicare funding. That was reinstated this summer.

Broughton's interim director, Dr. Art Robarge, said he was disappointed with the decision because officials have worked to improve the facility over the last year.

Officials said the hospital will appeal the decision again.
