WINST0N-SALEM - A 23-month-old toddler was killed after she was hit by a pickup Thursday night, police said.

Narcisco Salinas Vega, 30, of 5014 Collins Road in Hamptonville, was driving a 1998 Dodge pickup north in a public parking lot in the 3700 block of Yarbrough Avenue about 7:30 p.m. when Betci Ruiz darted in front, according to Winston-Salem police.

She was struck from the right. Betci was taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, where she died of her injuries, police said.

Neither speed nor alcohol were factors, police said, adding it was unknown as of early Friday morning whether charges would be filed.

It was the city's eighth traffic fatality this year.
