Water treatment plant in the homestretch
RANDLEMAN - A groundbreaking was held this morning for the Regional Water Treatment Plant at Randleman Reservoir.
The event marks a turn toward the homestretch for one of the largest and longest-term regional projects in the Piedmont Triad.
The $42 million plant and $20 million network of lines and pumps that run from it is the culmination of more than 20 years worth of effort and investment from Greensboro, High Point, Randolph County, Randleman, Archdale and Jamestown.
The plant is expected to begin providing drinking water to the communities in 2010.
Randleman Reservoir work began in 1968 with $11 million from Congress to provide flood control and a municipal water supply by damming the Deep River.
Over the intervening years, several municipalities had to compromise and work together to see the project through.
"This proves that regionalism can work, but it's not easy," said Lewis Dorsett, and Archdale city councilman and chairman of the Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority Board of Directors.
